“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.“— is there anyone out who is unaware of this proverb amongst us? No, right!? This proverb basically highlights the importance of fruits in our life to stay healthy. The origin of this proverb dates back to 1866 and was first recorded in Great Britain.
But here are pointers indicating that fruits needn’t be treated as synonyms for nutritional value. We should be careful on consumption of unripe fruits which can prove disastrous to our various organs, particularly those of us suffering from Gastro-Intestinal (GI) tract ailments should be more careful with respect to unripe fruits.
Below are a few things that can happen if you eat unripe fruits:
- Digestion is stressful
The very fact that unripe fruits are hard to chew is a clear indication that they exert a lot of pressure on our digestive tract. Some type of unripe fruits can cause a lot of irritation in our GI tract and are harsh on soft tissues of our digestive system
- Mild toxins are inherent in some fruits
Fruits like Pineapple and Tomatoes in their unripe stage contain a minute quantity of toxins that can be harmful to the human body.
- Tooth Sensitivity
Our teeth contain a protective cover called enamel. But this enamel gets damaged by frequent consumption of unripe fruits which are hard to chew. Sometimes the damage caused to enamel might expose nerves in our mouth causing toothache and sensitivity. Also the presence of acids and tannins in these fruits damage enamel to a great extent
- Stress on Stomach
The very tough and fibrous nature of unripe fruits poses a tough task to ‘Stomach’, considered to be the core organ of the digestive system. This inevitably leads to severe stomach ache.
- Loud Abdominal Sounds
Even if stomach manages to handle the stiffness of unripe food, further down, intestine struggles to digest this hard food and often creates grumbling sounds from the intestine region. Sometimes it causes an intestinal blockage which is disastrous to our well being.
- Nausea, Diarrhoea or Constipation
As we are aware, indigestion can result in three chronic conditions: Nausea sensation which might result in vomiting or might also lead to bad tummy problems like diarrhea or constipation. No matter which of these three evils attack us we are forced to stay away from our regular routine. We should be aware that too much fiber in diet will not always work in favor of easy digestion, sometimes it might cause severe indigestion problems too.
Warning: Pregnant women and people diagnosed with indigestion problem are always advised to consume fully ripened fruits instead of opting for unripe ones.
In short, it is better to wait for the fruit to ripen before consuming it so as to get full benefits from it.
