The human body is made up of different organs which are important for the survival, but some of the organs are much more important than the rest such as brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys. Though, the kidney is a very important organ which does an important job of taking the wastes out of the blood and making urine which is then transferred to a urinary tract which puts the waste out of a person’s body in form of pee. Kidney does a whole lot of activities like cleaning up the body of the wastes, sending the waste down the long tube called ureter, keeping the balance of fluids and minerals in the body besides filtering the blood and producing a hormone that tells the body to make red blood cells.
Though many of us are aware of the importance of an organ like a kidney in our body, we seldom try to follow diets which will help the body keep the kidney healthy and running. We throw in every kind of waste inside our body and make the kidney deal with it. At first, the kidney does a pretty good job but as we constantly consume harmful products the kidney stops to function at its optimal level and eventually gives up on us. We have made a list of 8 important mistakes that we humans tend to commit which has a dangerous effect on the kidney. Do read on to understand about them and take necessary steps to stop yourself from committing such mistakes as they can prove to be very costly to you. The 8 big mistakes are:
- Drinking insufficient water
Though daily water requirement depends on age, the weight of the person and also the climate around it is found out that on an average an adult female needs to drink 2.7 liters of water and an adult male needs to drink 3.7 liters of water each day to stay healthy. We do a great disservice to our body, especially, to our kidney by not drinking enough water every day. Drinking insufficient water leads to decrease in renal blood circulation which directly results in accumulation of poison in our bodies. The kidneys also regulate red blood cells production and eliminate metabolic wastes from the body and the most important ingredient for them to carry on with their function smoothly is water. Hence, start drinking at least 6-8 glass of water on a daily basis.
- Delay in going to the bathroom
There’s a reason why you feel the need to go to the bathroom. As soon as you receive the signal, you have to go to the bathroom without delay. The reason being the pressure of urine in the kidneys creates pressure back on the kidney which eventually leads to renal failure.
- Abuse of painkillers
Painkillers have a negative impact on your kidney and hence it is advised by the experts not to consume painkillers when you are able to bear the pain. Consuming too many painkillers will not only harm your kidney but it has a negative effect on other organs of your body too. So it is better to treat your pain with a natural painkiller than abusing the painkillers available in medical stores.
- Not taking medication for cold and flu
Many of you have the habit of letting the cold and flu go away on their own and not taking any medication which is very bad for your kidneys. Not treating cold and flu immediately after having them, or not resolving the problem soon can harm your kidney as a prolonged session of cold and flu can have harmful effects on your kidneys.
- Too much caffeine
There are many people among us who consume coffee more than anything else. They can’t even think of skipping a drink of coffee let alone stopping it completely. Lately, people have started to recognize the side effects of consuming too much caffeine, and among the list of organs that are affected by consumption of caffeine come kidney too. Caffeine has the tendency to increase blood pressure among people which has a negative impact on the kidney.
- Consuming too much alcohol
There are many problems that a person has to face as a result of drinking too much alcohol and kidney failure is one among them. As alcohol consists of plenty of toxins it can damage the kidney beyond repair which may even lead to kidney failure. Kidney failure as we all know significantly increases the risk of premature death. Anything above a glass or two of alcohol is extremely dangerous for the well being of the kidney.
- Heavy consumption of sodium
Salt which is an important ingredient of most of the food products that we consume contains sodium in it. Kidneys face undesirable stress while trying to process the sodium which can cause significant damage to the kidneys. Doctors all over the world advice people to lower the consumption of sodium to the least extent possible.
- Exaggerated protein intake
People have a misconception that consuming food with heavy protein will have a good effect on the human body. But researchers have found out that intake of high quantities of protein can have a negative effect on the kidney. Though proteins are good for the body and it helps you in various ways, the intake of proteins should be limited as their consumption leads to boost in metabolic loads which effects kidney in a bad way.
As they say prevention is better than cure, please do make the necessary changes in your life to make sure that small mistakes committed by you don’t hurt you in the long run.
